The latest from the food scene.

Life of pie? Adelaide says yes, with its oven-hot pizza scene.

Pizzerias powered by buzz and good times are ruling the Adelaide food scene and this trend, like the crowds, just keeps rising.

Sunny’s Pizza is one of the party starters, inspired by an apparent lack of rowdy fun in the local scene. “Pizza and casual party times go hand in hand,” says Andy Nowell, one of five young guns who turned a CBD warehouse into a much-talked-about site, where the music is loud, tables can be cleared to create a dance floor and curfew doesn’t hit until 2am. You’re also here for puffed-crust Neapolitan pizza built on slow-proved dough.

Superior Napoli-style pizza also defines the appeal of Lost in a Forest at Uraidla in the Adelaide Hills (which is the local clubhouse for various Basket Range winemakers), and Pizzateca at McLaren Vale, run by former Empire of the Sun drummer Tony Mitolo.

Chicco Palms in suburban Brooklyn Park busts a different move. Retro Italo-Americana décor by Mash Design sets the scene for Roman-style pizza. Dough made with minimal yeast is proved for two days before being cooked in a 350C oven for a thinner, crisper base.

Etica is expanding to present two different styles of pizza. Its city venue at Gilles Street will continue as Etica Napolitana, while Etica Pizza al Taglio, its new premises on Halifax Street specialises in dense rectangular slices.

“Pizza has always been popular, so it’s not a fad,” says Nowell. “This party’s not going to end any time soon.”
