Los Angeles has welcomed Short
Stories, a swish new 66-room hotel, which has reinvigorated a 1960s building with a lush courtyard and pool, checkerboard marble floors and custom-designed furniture. The boutique hotel hopes to bring back old-school hospitality and is located just across from The Grove, which is the epicentre of LA’s arts and culture scene.
In New York, The Ned NoMad nods to 1920s New York glamour, with a 167-room hotel and members-club-only bars and lounge spaces. Conceived by Soho House mastermind Nick Jones, the hotel’s Dining Room focuses on American classics, while the Little Ned offers bar snacks, and there’s also Northern Italian restaurant, Cecconi’s.
AUSTRALIA
Tasmania’s Kittawa Lodge is welcoming chef Danielle Alvarez for a residency in August. The former Fred’s chef will personally cook for guests, as part of a three-night package at the oceanfront King Island property.
The InterContinental Double Bay
has engaged Maurice Terzini to overhaul its bar offering. The Bar hopes to restore the old-world glamour of great international hotel bars, with a live pianist and jazz ensemble, classic cocktails and a Martini service trolley. Food-wise
Terzini has enlisted help from Alex Prichard (Icebergs Dining Room and Bar) with a menu that includes beef tartare, marron cooked over coals served with crêpes, caviar and oysters. The team also scoured the hotel’s archives to unearth autographed records and mementos, antique silverware and historic photographs.
Finally, in Melbourne Ovolo South
Yarra has welcomed a new hidden bar, Backroom. Adjoining the hotel’s Latin American-influenced restaurant Lona Misa, the 45-seat subterranean bar has called upon creative drinks director Andrea Gualdi (ex Maybe Sammy) to showcase Australia’s best spirits and brews.
