It’s re­fresh­ing to speak to a man­ag­ing di­rec­tor and hear him spruik the im­por­tance of peo­ple. Hav­ing pre­vi­ously worked in fi­nance, be­fore mak­ing moves into the au­to­mo­tive sec­tor via Jaguar and then Audi’s par­ent com­pany, Volk­swa­gen, San­som be­lieves too many board­rooms con­tinue to over­look the im­por­tance of al­lo­cat­ing time to tal­ent man­age­ment, ac­qui­si­tion and de­vel­op­ment. “When you join an or­gan­i­sa­tion, you have to have a clear strat­egy. And then, once you have that, you must cre­ate the peo­ple plan – be­cause you can’t have a business plan with­out a peo­ple plan, they’re just so im­por­tant and too of­ten over­looked. ”Get the right peo­ple in place, give them the clear vi­sion strat­egy and then give clear ob­jec­tives and per­for­mance man­age­ment on a daily ba­sis. It’s some­thing I’ve tried to put in place over the past 12 months – we now have a clearer vi­sion about what we’re try­ing to do. We had a big in­ter­nal re­struc­ture and we’re start­ing to see the green shoots of that coming through.”
