Suitcases are a lot like cars. Bear with us here. There are people who follow all the latest releases and newest features, who obsess over the various makes and models or colour schemes. Then there’s everyone else, who only cares that it gets them from A to B. And of course, there’s nothing wrong with buying yourself the classic box on wheels. But amid a conveyor belt of ugly suitcases, one brand has managed to stand out as the go-to option for the fashion set. Originally founded in 1898, Rimowa went on to produce the world’s fifirst suitcases made from duraluminum, a hardened aluminium alloy, which also featured the brand’s trademark vertical grooves. Proof of Rimowa’s fashion credentials, last year it joined the stable of brands at LVMH and is currently run by the son of the conglomerate’s founder, stylish 26-year-old Alexandre Arnault. Yes, designer suitcases are a thing – and as with everything else in fashion right now, that means collabs. In April, Rimowa joined forces with reigning leaders of all things streetwear, Supreme, to release a special pair of red and black Rimowa x Supreme suitcases. Didn’t get your hands on one? Try ebay – we wouldn’t hold out much hope, though. Two months later, this was followed by an equally hyped collaboration, with fashion brand Off-white. Designer, DJ and now Louis Vuitton artistic director Virgil Abloh put his own spin on the classic cases in transparent polycarbonate, which were unveiled at his Paris Off-white menswear show. Now, it’s Fendi’s turn. The Italian label has released its own interpretation on a Rimowa carry-on case featuring Fendi’s classic ‘FF’ logo, with red or blue leather handles – adding to the black and yellow version released last November – and an adjustable belt. The three different cases are available now from selected Fendi and Rimowa boutiques. Our only advice? Get in fast.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP Hypebeasts everywere rejoiced at the release of Supreme x Rimowa suitcases; lucky for customs officials, Off-white’s collab with the luxury travel maison featured a see-through casing; the new Fendi x Rimowa suitcase released in June; new menswear artistic director, Virgil Abloh, visits the Rimowa factory.
