Pair appear for alleged cop assault
An engaged couple accused of attacking two country police officers during a traffic stop, causing them cuts and bruises that needed hospital treatment, will reappear in court next month.
Daniel James Dwane, 33, and Kassandra Monica Chilcott, 30, were each granted a four-week adjournment to seek more legal advice at a short hearing in Narrogin Magistrate’s Court last week.
The couple are each charged with one count of assaulting a public officer over the alleged incident on Saturday, May 19, in Wagin.
Police allege officers stopped the Wagin couple’s vehicle for a random breath test about 11pm at the intersection of Wendell and Johnston streets in the town’s south.
Police say that Mr Dwane and Ms Chilcott became aggressive towards the male sergeant, female senior constable and each other.
Ms Chilcott is accused of attacking the female senior constable “to the head and throat” while the officers were speaking to her partner and trying to defuse the situation.
“She then allegedly continued the assault by further kicking and striking the officer,” police said in a statement.
“The male sergeant intervened and was allegedly wrestled to the ground by the 33-year-old man.
“The sergeant then attempted to assist the female officer but was further assaulted by both the woman and the man.”
Police said the officers were able to call for back-up after using capsicum spray and the couple were taken into custody and later charged.
The officers were taken to Wagin Hospital with injuries suffered in the alleged assault.
“Additional officers attended the scene along with an ambulance,” police said.
“Both officers were treated for lacerations and bruising injuries. They have since been released.”
The couple are due back in court on June 26.
