Orchestra sure to hit right note

Great Southern Herald - - News - Jessica Cuthbert

Great tunes with all the punch and power of a full orchestra will be a highlight in Katanning this weekend.

The South Side Symphony Orchestra, from Perth, will be in town and more than 40 musicians will take to the stage and delight audiences with their news sounds.

South Side Symphony is one of Perth’s younger orchestras and has carved out a reputation for bringing great music of all sorts to audiences in new and innovative settings.

This weekend’s program includes Fanfare for the Common Man, by Aaron Copland, the show tune Strike up the Band, by George Gershwin, and the Dambusters March from the film of the same name, composed by Eric Coates.

Also on Saturday’s program are the Carmen Suite No 1, by Georges Bizet, and the Sabre Dance and Adagio from Spartacus, by Aram Khachaturian.

For the children, the program will include the Dambusters March, selections from Carmen, and the soundtrack from Pirates of the Caribbean. Children’s concerts have been a big part of what South Side Symphony Orchestra does as they are introduced to the instruments.

Both concerts, conducted by musical director Laurissa WyllieMcCarthy, are at Katanning Town Hall. The Saturday concert is at 7pm and the children’s concert is at 10.30am on Sunday.

Tickets can be bought from the Shire of Katanning.
