Invitational XI too strong for BDCA

Great Southern Herald - - Sport - Michael Traill and Mitch Woodcock

The WA Invitational XI have created history by upsetting the Bunbury & Districts Cricket Association in the final of the revived Country Cup at the WACA on Sunday.

The Upper Great Southern was well represented, with Williams’ Rodney Ford, Towns’ Perrin Quartermaine and Harrismith’s Arron Quartermaine all earning themselves selection for the decider in Perth.

Perrin Quartermaine opened the batting with the team’s captain Tim Hutchison, and made a quick 37 runs to lay the foundation of the Invitational XI’s innings.

North Kalgoorlie’s Bevan Bennell (0) and Rockingham Mandurah’s Aaron Burrage (7) both fell quickly after Perrin Quartermaine’s dismissal, leaving the Invitational XI in trouble.

However, as Ford came to the crease with Hutchison still there, the pair posted a damaging 107-run partnership before Ford was dismissed for 47.

Hutchison went on to make 107, while Arron Quartermaine left the ground unbeaten on eight runs as the Invitational XI posted 6-250 from their 50 overs.

The BDCA got off to a flier in their run chase, with Reece O’Connell and Jono Whitney playing with confidence.

But Hutchison’s decision to open with left-arm spinner Daniel Abel paid dividends, when he bowled O’Connell for just eight.

Young fast bowler Adam France was causing some trouble and he was rewarded when he bowled Whitney for just 17, after the batsman mistimed a straight drive.

France then got the big wicket of former Western Warrior and Zimbabwe Test bastman Murray Goodwin (10), who knicked one through to the keeper, before Tom Buchanan (3) was subjected to a similar fate.

Chris Marrow did his best to get the BDCA over the line with 65 runs from 69 balls before he was run out trying to get a second run after a shot to deep midwicket.

Marrow and Rodney Shemeld put on a 54-run partnership for the fifth wicket, before Hutchison (3-51 off 10 overs) bowled Shemeld for just 17.

Hutchison continued to torment the BDCA, taking the wicket of Clint Hewson (9) and Cruize Ciallella (20).

A late fight back from Joe Barningham (30) could not stop the WA Invitational XI from getting the win.
