App gives daily stock price access
Returning to his Kojonup-based family farm after a nearly threeyear stint in the UK, Robert Kelly was frustrated at the lack of readily available price information for livestock.
The former Plum Grove employee knew there was a solution to provide producers with upto-date prices for cattle, goats and sheep at the touch of a button, despite a platform not yet existing.
It sparked Mr Kelly — who played a crucial role in developing CBH’s DailyGrain service, developed by Plum Grove, to give growers better access to daily grain prices — to create LIVEstock Pricing.
The free mobile app, founded in January this year, provides farmers with access to public bids for sheep, cattle and goats across Australia and contact details for local buyers.
“LIVEstock Pricing is very similar to DailyGrain in that it just takes the buyers’ prices and sends them out to growers on a daily basis,” Mr Kelly said.
“It gives growers a good indication of what is happening in the market.
“When I finished at Plum Grove in 2015, I spent a couple of years overseas and then came home and started looking at getting back into livestock.
“I wanted to get some information on pricing. . . it was either speak to your agent or wait for the weekly MLA market reports.
“So I started looking at a model similar to what I’d worked with during DailyGrain.
“We’ve spent the last year developing it and building the platform to make it intuitive to growers.”
LIVEstock was one of businesses to participate in Dr Natasha Ayers’ Harvest Accelerator 2.0 Program through AgriStart.
Mr Kelly completed the oneweek intensive course and was awarded the Agtech Investor Ready Prize for his efforts.
The innovator said the weeklong workshop provided valuable information on how to ensure an agricultural-focused business remained viable. “There were some good mentors,” he said.
“It had two benefits: the immediate impact from the mentors and the process you go through to give others more confidence in what you are doing.”
