[Bars 18-25] The chorus either needs light ‘feathering’ from the picking hand or backing off the guitar’s volume slightly – almost certainly what Gary would’ve done – to avoid the powerchord palm-mutes dominating. You can open out as you approach the A7 and the subsequent lead turnaround idea. [Bars 23-25] If you haven’t tried turning down to clean things up, then this track is a great vehicle for you to start experimenting. You can turn down to as low as 2 or 3 on the guitar’s pot without losing drastic amounts of volume. Many people prefer the ‘not totally clean’ sound that this produces.
