Example2 SOLO 2
cd track 27
This solo starts off with a phrase based around volume pot swells. This works well if your volume pot is located closer to the strings like on a Stratocaster, but if yours is not in reach a volume pedal might be your best friend here. You want to employ your fourth finger to do the rolling of the pot, and most players tend to keep the finger straight and move it up and down rather than wrapping it around and rolling the pot with this motion. It might be an idea to have a look on YouTube to see Trout doing this, to help further. Bars 5 and 6 take this volume swell concept to another level as we are also bending the pitch, applying a heavy vibrato and releasing the bend. I suggest you break this apart and work on one element at a time. Get the bend and release together, then apply the vibrato on top, finally get that fourth finger rolling the volume pot to create the swell. The other vital element that is study intends you to focus on is the intent and delivery of the phrases. Once you have the notes under your hand think about how you commit to the phrases, always finding a way to express that intent. Trout is very vocal about his belief in this so make sure it’s at the top of your priority list with everything that you are playing.
