Having cultivated an individualistic sound through five albums of searing yet glorious black metal, Manchester’s Winterfylleth have completely changed tack with their latest offering, The Hallowing Of Heirdom. Played purely through sweetly-picked acoustics and violins, trading in harsh vocals for harmonious choral chants, its traditional folk odes to British history and landscapes are as expansive and intense as their more extreme material. Yet this release offers a far more accessible inlet. The haunting vocals of Latch To A Grave evoke a primal but intimate spirit, while the simple strumming and haunting melody of The Nymph is achingly beautiful no matter which end of the musical scale you sit. A fearless accomplishment that we enjoyed very much.
