To develop this approach, listen to some of the great jazz singers and hear how they form melodies and improvise scatphrases. For a great example, check out Carmen McRae’s version of Satin Doll on the album The Great American Songbook. It’s a lesson in superb phrasing (and also contains a burning solo by Joe Pass). Artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra are worth a close listen, too.
