Stevie often played Strats with exceptionally heavy strings - .013-.058 - usually into blackface Fender Super Reverbs, often blending these with Dumbles and Marshalls. The overdrive tone came from a Tube Screamer, setting the volume very high, pushing the amps into a natural overdrive while retaining their clarity. Any clean amp with an overdrive pedal running at high volume with the gain set low, will get you into the right ballpark.
