Get the Tone

While Tony Iommi is seen as the father of heavy metal this isn’t a modern, saturated guitar tone. It’s the power section of Tony’s Laney amp working hard to drive the sound. So, don’t add too much preamp gain and, if possible, use a guitar with humbuckers, or roll the treble back if using single-coils. Iommi is one of the most famous SG users, with instruments from John Birch and signature models from Gibson.
