Jim Hall was one of the leading lights in jazz guitar from the 1970s until his death in 2013. Listen to some of Jim’s recordings, as the idea of taking a motif and developing it throughout a tune is a key element of his playing. Also check out the incredible modern jazz guitarist Julian Lage, for a more complex take on the technique. Ella Fitzgerald’s scat improvisations also featured such ideas.
