The background

Mike French, Guitarist reader: I’ve been through the full circle of gear. I started with basic amps and a couple of (Boss/Arion) pedals, then moved on to a multi-channel valve amp and digital multieffects… then went digital with no ‘real’ amps until a couple of years ago (PODXT). I’m now back to ‘real’ amps and a few pedals. I find it easier to get nice sounds quickly instead of all that menu-scrawling, which leads to my actual question about delay. I’ve never really understood it, so could you do a basic description?
