i learned From that
As An ex-GuitAr dealer i’ve been fortunate enough in recent years to have had the opportunity to play many a vintage Fender Jaguar and was always struck by their general inconsistency in terms of sound and feel, or general playability. Of course, this is entirely a matter of personal preference, but a bloody good set up, for one, can never go amiss, and all too often the type and gauge of string is overlooked.
i recently acquired an old 1963 Fender Jaguar strung up with a standard set of 10-gauge strings (my regular option for electric guitars), although i couldn’t help but think there was still room for improvement and so i began to experiment with various types and gauges of string. Harking back to the tradition of heavy gauge, flatwound strings i decided to give them a go, much to my immediate disappointment! i finally settled upon a set of roundwound 11s, which seemed to nicely compensate the tension of the Jaguar’s shorter, 24-inch scale. it also considerably improved the guitar’s punch, clarity and sustain. the moral of this story: don’t be shy about trying different string gauges when it comes to getting the best out of your guitar.
