Lance Lopez

Rip-snorting Texas blues workout Keen-eyed readers may already have clocked Lance Lopez as the guitar dynamo at the heart of Supersonic Blues Machine, the supergroup brought together by ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons. Lance has a long solo career under his belt, however, and if you haven’t experienced his bone-rattlingly powerful take on Texas blues his latest, Tell The Truth, is a fine place to start.

Although SRV is a touchstone, Lopez has a more muscular style and is also a devilishly good slide man too, as evidenced on the rollicking boogie Cash My Check where he lets rip with superb phrasing and intonation that recalls Joe Walsh at his best. Elsewhere, Lopez manages to breathe fresh vigour into the old blues trope of blowing your wages on whisky and wild living on Down To One Bar and shows off his powerful, accurate alternate picking dexterity on Mr Lucky. Lopez commits himself to the hilt in every solo and vocal line – making this a fine effort from a raging bull of a guitarist. [JD] Standout track: Cash My Check For fans of: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Walsh, Joe Bonamassa
