Just read last month’s Mod Squad (Doing The Splits – Part 2, 438) and it’s something I’d like to try out myself, but here’s the problem: I can’t solder! I’ve bought a soldering iron and watched YouTube demos, but my soldering attempts are not up to scratch. Could you do a feature, with video content? For example, Dave demonstrating how he’d solder the pickup wiring, what solder type he’d recommend – any tips all on video so we can see it demonstrated by someone reputable and not the self-appointed experts flooding YouTube. I think it would be a great feature and maybe give the readers who look at the articles but think,‘I’d like to try that but where do I start?’ a gentle nudge in the right direction. Jeff, via email Great idea, Jeff, which we have duly passed on to Mr Mod Squad, himself, Dave Burrluck for covering in a future issue. Our own fumblings with a soldering iron have yielded useful, if messy results, ranging from making our own instrument cables (a seriously handy money saving activity) to wiring in new pickups. The new non-leaded solder is a little bit trickier to work with than the old type, but it’s not rocket science and is a very satisfying way to deepen your involvement with maintaining and modding your guitar.
