LUTHIERY BEYOND LIMITS

-

I just read the article about the Kauer Starliner guitar (issue 446). Its shape looked quite familiar and your article referred correctly to Claudio and Claudia Pagelli. I would love to learn more about them and other real high-end builders, such as the Luthiers Beyond Limits group. All these builders produce one-offs or extremely small series of guitars, so they normally can only be seen/touched/played at conventions. Is there anything in that direction planned? Stephan Meier, via email Hi Stephan, we’ve featured the fabulous Pagelli guitars in our Wishlist section in recent years, which is really the place in the mag set aside for out-and-out exotica and bespoke guitars. Every time we go to NAMM, the area featuring high-end, smallvolume luthiers is always fascinating to walk through and, if readers are interested, it’s certainly something we’ll delve further into next time.

I CAN HEAR MUSIC…

I was listening to You Can’t Always Get What

You Want by The Rolling Stones through headphones and noticed how the song works on two channels. Mainly the singing and horn at the start of the song coming through the left ear! Anyway, I just had my left earphone in and I noticed that at about 0:50 to 0:55 of the song, just after the choir ends and the horn starts, there is music playing in the background! I’m not sure what song it is, but thought it was a cool Easter egg. I have tried looking online for anything about this and have failed, so not sure if it has ever been mentioned before? If there is anything you know about this, I would love to know! Shane Davies, via email

We had a listen and must confess that we don’t know exactly what that is – it’s faint and sounds like it’s possibly an R&B-type track that’s distantly audible as print-through from an earlier recording made on the master tape? That’s sheer conjecture, though – if any Stones experts can shed light, please share. Have readers noticed any other cool hidden features of classic albums?
