2020 MOONRISE KINGDOM OF MCLAREN VALE SHIRAZ, GRENACHE, PETITE SIRAH

- Elena Brooks

This is good. A savvy blend, serving a confluence of pulpy aromatics; firm, sandy-feeling tannins and a skein of freshness that works with the morass of fruit, extract and perfume going on around it. Matured 18 months in new and used French wood, imparting vanilla and a waft of mocha. Nothing over the top. The finish, a long beam of pixelated tannins, chewy and savoury and akin to biting into the ripest grape skins imaginable. A smart wine in this vintage. NG 14.5% alc.

$120 / 2030

What’s special about this wine, and when do you believe it will be at its peak for drinking?

Coming from our Firehawk Farm vineyard in McLaren Vale, this blend of shiraz (60%), grenache (20%) and petite sirah (20%) results in a textural wine with big tannins. This wine can age for 15 or more years. Invest in a few bottles, some to enjoy now and the rest over the next decade or two. It won’t disappoint.
