As the world’s first winery to be certified carbon neutral since inception, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, from our state-of-the-art winery designed to collect rainwater run-off, to endophytic grass to keep grass grubs away. A trip to our vineyard is not only about tasting our award-winning wines, but also seeing the 25 wetlands we’ve developed for biodiversity, the chickens we use for pest control, the miniature Babydoll sheep and Kunekune pigs who mow the rows, and our “Special Brew” compost that aids water retention and reduces local industry waste (it glistens with mussel shells). We also generate renewable energy through the largest solar panel array in NZ, wind turbines and vine prunings, which are baled and burned for energy. Since opening in 2008, Yealands has won 25 trophies, 1300-plus accolades and a number of sustainability awards, proving the best way to craft beautiful wines is in partnership with nature.
