To mark the long-awaited release of the movie adaptation of Tim Winton’s iconic novel Breath, the photographer and artist shot Simon Baker, who co-wrote, directed and stars in the film, on the Colo River west of Sydney. “We shot at a friend’s property, a place that has given us all a lot of joy over the years, so it was just about feeling a sense of that place and the effect it has on us; a place to step off the grid and reflect, ”yeldham says. See the portfolio and story, “Breath Taking”, on page 118. My work is … “often shot outdoors with natural light, and with nature featuring heavily. My father was a radiologist, so I have memories of him diagnosing X-ray films on the big light box in the ’70s, with the black and white tones, and being fascinated by form and shadow. I have been fortunate enough to photograph some captivating faces this past couple of years, including Jane Goodall, and another favourite moment was photographing Richard Roxburgh for the cover of Spectrum. I enjoy trying to capture the raw, unscripted moments.” Some of the artists who inspire me are … “Andrew Quilty and the unsung heroes who are brave enough to document war and global atrocities, Sebastião Salgado, Egon Schiele, Liz Looker, Mary Ellen Mark, and the sublime words of Patti Smith.” My favourite place to be by the water in Australia is … “Pittwater in the Northern Beaches of Sydney and Wategos Beach in Byron Bay.”
