Shine secures mug
A field of 67 players registered for the monthly mug prize sponsored by Jeff Gale.
Peter Shine, who shot an impressive 73 off the stick with 68 net, was announced the winner from the unlucky Ian Grieves with net 69. Alan Grieve was third with net 70 and Michael Blackburn was fourth with net 71, beating Graham Halton and Ming Yap on a countback.
Shine, who has been in great form, continued on from the previous weeks. His iron play was the feature of his game setting up numerous birdie opportunities. But was only able to capitalise on number 10.
He pared the first nine and was one over on the second nine. The form of Shine has been consistent and his win was a worthy one. His handicap has come down from 7.2 to 3.8 during this time.
Grieves, who plays off an 18 handicap, was the hard luck story of the day. He had put himself in a winning position but faltered on the final two holes. He was going along nicely after starting on the back nine where he shot 42 off the stick including a birdie on No.11.
He was five over on the front nine after seven holes but could not keep it together for the final two holes which unfortunately he double bogeyed. Grieves will be happy with his performance which has seen him lose a shot off his handicap. Grieve who was third had a couple of contrasting nines of 49 on the front and a 45 on the back. His four putt on No. 6 was most probably his undoing on taking the major prize. Other than that blemish he played steady golf on his 24 handicap. Blackburn is playing some good golf of late continued his resurgence in form to record nines of 43 and 42 respectively.
Robyn Peet fresh from the Ladies Foursomes victory continued her good form to have the best ladies score. Playing off an 18 handicap her good score was set up on the back nine where she shot 42 off the stick.
Great conditions for golf enticed 51 players to register for the Harold Brislin event on Wednesday, October 13.
Mick Shilling produced one of his great scores to win with 41 points from the in-form Frank Italiano who scored 40 points.
Mike Kelly was third with 38 points counting out Geoff Ireland on a countback.
Shilling’s win was set up on the back nine where he scored 24 points including four-pointers on No.2 and No. 9.
He has been building up to a win as he has had produced scores of 36 points and 37 points recently. Italiano who found his form during country week continued his consistent play to be the runner-up.
