Myalup driver Jamie Maiolo won the Scardifields Smash Repairs King of Wings at Perth Motorplex on Saturday night in spectacular fashion, crossing the line backwards.

The margin between Maiolo and second-place getter Jason Kendrick was just 0.299 of a second and proved a nailbiting finish to what had been a see-saw- ing battle over the past 10 laps of the 37-lap event. On the final corner of the last lap, Maiolo was clipped by a lapped car, which sent him spinning out of control.

“Kendrick was throwing a few slide-jobs at us, but I managed to hold on and keep him off,” Maiolo said.

“I got tagged by a lapped car right on the last corner and spun it round across the finish line.”

The event was the third round of the Maddington Toyota Sprintcar Series, with the win at the weekend taking Maiolo’s tally to two, meaning he will be the driver to beat in the coming events.

“The trick is a good car set-up and positioning yourself on the right part of the track,” he said.

The race meet proved a successful one for the Maiolo family, with Jamie’s brother Brad finishing in fifth place and both finishing second in each of their two heats.
