WAROONA COMMUNITY LIGHTS
Have you noticed the brightly decorated Christmas tree next to the Visitor Centre? This is part of a project developed by the Waroona Community Lights Committee. This committee consists of representatives from Western Power, Curtis Electrical Contacting, Alcoa, Shire of Waroona, Lions Club of Waroona, Leos Club of Waroona, Waroona Community Car, Waroona Senior Citizens Welfare Association and Waroona Youth Advisory Council.
During November, the Community Lights Committee gathered at the Town Christmas Tree to install this year’s new lights and decorations. It was a long hot day for the ‘supervisors’ on the ground - one could only imagine how the Western Power guys were doing in the cherry picker! It was great to see locals and tourists alike stop by, take photos, and ask about the project. The flow on effect of these same people admiring the yarn bombing at the Visitor Centre and wandering into the service station and bakery for something to eat and drink, highlighted the positive impact that the project can have for the local tourism and economy.
A huge thank you to Western Power who donated their cherry picker and their workers for the entire day. A big thank you to Water Corporation who as land owners allowed the tree to be decorated. Also a thank you to members of the Waroona Community Lights Committee who assisted with the installation of this year’s lights.
The Committee also installed new additions to the project at Drakesbrook Place. The giant reindeer and stars bring the festive spirit during the day and night, and were made possible through a grant from Lotterywest. A huge thank you to Curtis Electrical and the Shire of Waroona Works Crew for using their expertise to best situate these lights.
The Committee already has plans to “light up” a number of areas throughout the town next year, so hopefully local businesses, community groups and residents support the project, and the Waroona Community Lights Committee is successful in its pursuit of external funding. WATCH THIS SPACE
