Junior sides do their district proud at country week
Two Wellington District Cricket Association teams put in great performances at junior country week.
The under-16s team won the B section, going undefeated, and the under 14s won five out of six matches to finish runners-up in their age group’s B section.
Led by coaches Chris Marrow and Grant Milbanke, notable bowling performances in the under-16s included Broome pace bowler Fletcher Ghandour’s 4-18 of 7.4 overs — his first spell on a Turf Wicket.
Leschenault’s Broden Pollard took 3-26 off seven overs, and Eaton’s Billy Boucher’s spin-bowl netted him 3-33 off nine overs. Leschenault pace bowlers Lochlan Allan (2.30) and Rory Given (2.39) kept the run rate down with economical spells.
Batsmen Billy Boucher (top score 87) and Leschenault’s Nich Wilson (top score 66) were well supported by the top order Christo Le Roux (Leschenault), Zane Drage and Ayden Todoroff (both from Eaton), and middle order batsmen David Wilkinson and Caleb Milbanke (Leschenault) throughout the week.
Wicket-keeping from Zane Drage and Fraser Ward kept the extras at bay.
King and assistant coach Rob Marshall led an enthusiastic team of players from Burekup, Eaton and Leschenault cricket clubs in the under-14s.
Notable batting performances included Leschenault’s Nico Le Roux (47) and Burekup’s Tyne Dodds (44no) and Isaac Evans (33).
Best bowling in an innings included Leschenault’s Eli Allan’s 3-17 off 6.3 overs, Burekup’s Emmett Templeton 3-20 off three overs and Leschenault’s Justin Marshall (3-28) off 10 overs.
Economical bowling from Burekup’s Joe Van Nierop (2.57), Laugh- lan Davies (2.63), Henry King (2.92), Leschenault’s Tyne Dodds (2.58), Samuel Tucker (2.67) and Rohan Ashworth (3.04) kept Wellington in the competition.
Six catches by Jaxon Sims (Eaton) and three run-outs by Alijaah Evans (Burekup) added to the excitement of the week.
It was a happy group of players that arrived back home on the team bus on Friday afternoon.
Wellington under-14s finished second in the B section of junior country week with five wins and one loss.
The Wellington under-16s won the B Section undefeated at junior country week.
