PIPELINE SERVES DUAL PURPOSE

Harvey Water has extended its water supply infrastructure into Kemerton Industrial Park in preparation for Albemarle’s planned lithium plant.

The pipeline also provides a number of firefighting supply points in and around Kemerton which can be used in the event of a bushfire.

Albemarle site director Daniel O’Shea said construction of the 60,000-tonne lithium hydroxide plant would begin soon now that infrastructure such as the pipeline was complete.

Mr O’Shea said earthworks were under way and the site would be operational via commissioning activities by July 2020.

“We’re very much focused on that process at the moment and busy making sure we get infrastructure like this pipeline in place leading to activity on site

“They (firefighting supply points) are an ability for us to get a supply of water from Harvey Water and as part of that process we’re able to provide these heavy units to be able to access water for local emergencies for fires, etc.”

Harvey Water business development manager Robyn Fenech said the firefighting supply points such as the new ones in Kemerton, proved invaluable in saving properties during the 2016 WaroonaYarloop bushfires.

“The main goal is to supply processed water to Albemarle and to existing and other future industri- es in Kemerton,” Ms Fenech said.

“A great associated benefit are these firefighting supply points that come with the pipeline... it allows local fire brigades, in the case of an emergency, to come and put their own valve fitting on the top of them and access water that comes out under constant pressure.”

“This is new for Kemerton and it’s only because of the pipeline coming into Albemarle that there is now this service in Kemerton.

Harvey Water general manager Bradd Hamersley said the project was an example of how of the local suppliers and contractors will benefit from the construction and operational phases of Albemarle’s plant.
