Fun by the sea

Haven Magazine - - SCHOOL HOLS -

Spring school holidays mean a return to the great outdoors – and especially the water. But why not try somewhere new? Stay away from the ‘normal’ bustling beaches with these three secluded seaside spots that offer loads of wholesome family fun.

Lined with towering Norfolk pine trees, the north Brisbane suburb of Scarborough boasts a beach with golden sand and calm, clear water. Enjoy lunch on the lush green grass under the shade of the trees, or catch some rays on the beach while ducking in and out of the water. Kids will love the pirate playground while mums and dads will love the many nearby cafes and restaurants that certainly make the most of their beachfront location. While you’re in the area, why not explore the nearby suburb of Redcliffe, which is home to the well-known Redcliffe Jetty. Whether you’re fishing for fresh whiting off the jetty or fresh farm goods on market day, the Redcliffe Jetty and the surrounding area make for a great day on the bay.

Raby BAY

Raby Bay is home to some pretty elite canal real estate in Brisbane’s east, but it’s also home to some wonderfully quiet and well-kept foreshore areas – quite the hidden gems. The main park extends a fair way along Masthead Drive. There’s a neat little stretch of sand called Masthead Beach that’s perfectly calm for littlies to frolic in the ocean. Toilets, play equipment, barbecue facilities and pathways galore will keep your family members as busy (or relaxed!) as they want to be. If you’re up for a ‘park crawl’ on your visit, Raby Bay Boulevard Park is a short drive away and offers more neat foreshore. Whether it’s a coffee on the way in, lunch, or a yummo icecream on the way home, you’ll find it all in the Raby Bay Harbourside precinct. The kids will love looking at the boats too! And, why not also explore the nearby Cleveland Lighthouse precinct on your day by the bay?

Between the jetty, the wading pool and pretty Pandanus Beach, Wynnum might just be one of Brisbane’s best-kept secrets. Take a stroll up and down the jetty, or relax on the white sand of Pandanus Beach at the jetty’s entrance – the spot is ideal for families, as the water is relatively calm thanks to the protection from Stradbroke and Moreton Islands. Alternatively, take a dip in the heritage-listed Wynnum Wading Pool, which has been enjoyed by Brisbane locals and holidaymakers since 1933. And, as if that isn’t enough, W. Poole playground – just a few metres from the jetty and wading pool – has a number of water fountains and playground equipment to keep the kids entertained for hours on end.
