We need to avoid get­ting caught up in the sugar spin around break­fast ce­re­als. New ABS data shows they con­trib­ute just 3 per cent of added sug­ars in Aus­tralian di­ets, and the ben­e­fits of eat­ing break­fast ce­re­als – bet­ter nu­tri­tion and health­ier weight – are con­sis­tent re­gard­less of the sugar content of the break­fast ce­real. This is the first time we have had Aus­tralian data com­par­ing types of break­fast ce­re­als, and it clearly shows fo­cus­ing on sug­ars is mis­placed.
