When Clare Bowditch won the ARIA Award in 2006 she did something pivotal. Bowditch threatened Steve Bracks during her speech: “Don’t make me get bumper stickers.” This came after the Victorian Government had recently taken away the Vic Rocks program. Bracksy leapt to it and ponied up

$15 million for aspiring musos. Ever since then our state governments have felt the wrath if they crossed our music industry. The Victorian Music Development Office is a new initiative and they break the metaphorical champagne bottle over Fed Square’s bow this Friday with four indigenous acts: The Merindas (above), Riverboy, Kee’ahn and Bumpy. Think sassy, soulful, brash and a touch of burlesque. Frisky fun. Main stage, Fed Square. Fri, 6pm. Free. fed
