Deals cross finish line

SOUTH Melbourne horse racing institution The Emerald Hotel will trot on, following its sale to a new custodian for the first time in almost 50 years. A deal close to $6.025m was inked for the watering hole, where sports stars and fans have traditionally gathered for major sporting events.

Jockey MICHELLE PAYNE (pictured) celebrated her historic Melbourne Cup win at the pub in 2015, and horse SUBZERO visited with carer GRAHAM SALISBURY seven years after his own 1999 Cup win.

A historic VFL deal was also made within the pub’s walls, when footy greats ALLEN AYLETT, RON JOSEPH and ALBERT MANTELLO poached RON BARASSI from Carlton to coach North Melbourne from 1973.

Kay & Burton chairman GERALD DELANY confirmed he purchased the Clarendon Street pub and would keep the drinks flowing.

“I’ve known the hotel for some considerable time. It’s quite the Melbourne icon, although I didn’t necessarily buy the property because it was one” Mr Delany said.

“On a very long-term basis, the property has development potential, but it’s not my intention to develop.

“I’m looking forward to a long relationship with the leasees, who have been running the hotel for a long period of time.”

JLL Hotels & Hospitality Group vice president Will Connolly said vendors the HART FAMILY had owned the building for 48 years

In Glen Iris, ex-Olympic runner SONIA O’SULLIVAN and her husband, Melbourne International Track Club director NIC BIDEAU, achieved a speedy $2.45m sale for 93 Glen Iris Road (pictured) within five days.

Buxton Sandringham’s Matthew Gray said he received three offers on the property, resulting in a “price that landed just above the quoted range”.

The Irish athletics champion and Bideau, who notably coached ex-wife CATHY FREEMAN, planned to stay in Melbourne, he added.

Former AFL footballer DALE THOMAS has shifted hopes of selling his own Glen Iris home to next year.

The ex-Magpie and Blue had to push back December 12 auction plans for 19 Allenby Avenue after a delay in paperwork. Marshall White’s Chris Barrett said the property would “be on the market early in the new year”.

It has a $2.5-$2.75m price guide.
