March date for Kilmore Cup

- JASON BONNINGTON

THE future of standing starts in Victorian harness racing looks shakier than ever after the news that the Kilmore Cup will become a 2700m mobile race next season.

One of Victoria’s most famous races, the Kilmore Cup has stagnated in recent seasons as a result of its Sunday afternoon October timeslot when most top pacers are just beginning their campaigns.

It is hoped the switch to Saturday night, March 19, and a $10,000 increase in prizemoney to $70,000 will help the cup return to its rightful place among Australia’s most sought-after trophies.

“We’re excited to shift the cup program to a Saturday night,” Kilmore Harness Racing Club chief executive Ben Murphy said.

“The Kilmore Cup is a good horse’s race and we were very keen to position the race to encourage the best to come and compete.

“It (March) is the showcase period for harness racing in Victoria and the Kilmore Cup takes its rightful place among the other races conducted in this strong period.”

The Kilmore Trotters Cup, conducted at the same meeting, will have its prizemoney raised to $20,000 and will now be staged a week after Great Southern Star night at Melton.
