Hawks look more ominous as Roughead returns

- BEN WATERWORTH AND WARWICK GREEN

HAWTHORN gained more momentum last night when Jarryd Roughead was selected for Saturday night’s blockbuster against Sydney at ANZ Stadium.

The triple premiership forward has missed the past two matches following surgery to remove a melanoma on his lip.

Roughead replaced Taylor Duryea, who is expected to miss a week with a shoulder injury.

“He’s been training fully for the last seven days,” Hawthorn football operations manager Chris Fagan told the club’s website in reference to Roughead. “He got the all-clear from the surgeon on Tuesday to say that the wound is fine and he’s OK to play football. He’s jumping out of his skin wanting to play.” SYDNEY defender Ted Richards was recalled after missing last week’s clash with Brisbane Lions because of concussion.

But the Swans will be without first-choice ruckman Mike Pyke (knee). ST KILDA named teenage defender Hugh Goddard for his first fixture in Sunday’s twilight game against Richmond.

The 18-year-old, who becomes the 10th debutant under coach Alan Richard-son, was rewarded for his strong form with Sandringham in the VFL.

“It’s been a while coming and I’m just grateful for the opportunity this week to get out there and show what I’ve been improving on,’’ Goddard told the club’s website.

“He’s been the consummate professional. He’s ticked every box and hasn’t missed a training session,’’ part-time defensive coach Danny Frawley said.

“He’s tough, unrelenting, courageous and ready.

“He’ll do well and some of the Richmond forwards will know he’s played his first game, that’s for sure.”

Richardson said he expected captain Nick Riewoldt would let the club know today how his tight calf had pulled up after training and whether he could take his place in the team. GEELONG captain Joel Sel- wood will miss the Cats’ home clash with the Western Bulldogs tomorrow because of suspension.

The Cats regained midfielder Mitch Duncan, who hasn’t played since Round 7 because of a foot injury. WESTERN BULLDOGS selected utility Jordan Roughead and ruckman Tom Campbell, but lost Will Minson (shoulder) and Fletcher Roberts (ankle) to injury.
