’I WAS TOO WHITE FOR SBS’
CELEBRITY chef Ben O’Donoghue once pitched a barbecue-themed cooking show to SBS but believes he was knocked back because he was a “white caucasian male”.
SBS’s loss is Seven’s gain, because O’Donoghue, who has penned a few barbecue cookbooks, is the main judge and host on new TV show Aussie Barbecue Heroes.
O’Donoghue said his original idea, which he pitched to SBS, was for an internationally flavoured series that explored different outdoor cooking techniques.
“I pitched a show, World On Fire, to SBS which involved travelling around to all these countries and looking at barbecues but no one picked it up,” he said.
“SBS said, ‘I wasn’t an SBS presenter because I am a white caucasian male’.
“That’s just reading between the lines.’’
