POKE The Bear af­firmed his sta­tus as the dog to beat in the Mel­bourne Cup af­ter win­ning the Sil­ver Bul­let (525m) at The Mead­ows on Mon­day night.

Seona Thomp­son’s sprinter over­came in­ter­fer­ence to run down a gal­lant Up Hill Jill in a photo fin­ish. It was his ninth win from his past 12 starts, which in­cludes the Group 1 Top­gun.

Or­son Allen’s cup prepa­ra­tions wrapped up with a bril­liant win in the Group 3 Shootout (515m) at Sandown Park on Thurs­day night.

Hav­ing been pipped on the line in last month’s Gee­long Gold Cup, Or­son Allen led all the way to beat Queens­land star Mau­rice Mi­nor, She’s Gifted and As­ton Kimetto in a sen­sa­tional 29.19sec.

Heats for No­vem­ber 23’s Mel­bourne Cup and Group 1 Bold Trease (715m) will be drawn on Tues­day.
