SO-CALLED “golden visas” for for­eign ty­coons who in­vest at least $3.54 mil­lion in the UK will be sus­pended in a crack­down on crime and money laun­der­ing.

Since 2008, Tier 1 visas have been is­sued to 3709 peo­ple, in­clud­ing 807 Rus­sians, let­ting them skip im­mi­gra­tion queues and snap up ev­ery­thing from prop­erty to foot­ball clubs.

Ap­pli­cants will now face au­dits of their fi­nan­cial and busi­ness in­ter­ests.

Im­mi­gra­tion Min­is­ter Caro­line Nokes said: “We will not tol­er­ate peo­ple who do not play by the rules … only gen­uine in­vestors, who in­tend to sup­port UK busi­nesses, can ben­e­fit from our im­mi­gra­tion sys­tem.’
