WHAT is the appropriate date to take down Christmas decorations and pack them away for another year? It’s a question put by William from Kensington because he’s seen plenty of festive ornaments still around.

Well, if you go by the 12 days of Christmas rule, that’s January 5. Or many people believe tidy-up time should be the Sunday that falls on the feast of the Epiphany, this year on January 6.

For the record, Melbourne City Council starts taking down its public decorations from Boxing Day and they’re all gone by mid-January.

Perhaps it doesn’t matter anymore — we had hot cross buns in shops by December 27, so maybe anything goes?
