Hills to Hawkesbury Living Magazine - - Local Politicians Say - By Mayor Clr Dr Michelle Burns

For the third year running, I’ll be joining a group of Hills business and community leaders to spend a night under the stars in freezing conditions for the Hills Winter Sleep Out.

The Hills Winter Sleep Out is a unique overnight event that gives participants an insight into what it would be like to be homeless. It’s a long cold night with nothing but cardboard boxes to sleep on, but it is a reminder of how fortunate we are to have a roof over our heads and a place to go home to at night.

Others in our community are not so fortunate. From time to time, we have someone sleeping on our streets, but generally homelessness in the Hills is in the form of “couchsurfing” as a result of financial difficulties and/or relationship breakdowns, as well as women and children escaping domestic violence and searching for crisis accommodation.

The Community Foundation of Northwest Sydney, Hills Community Aid, Lisa Harnum Foundation and Give and Take are the four charities that will be the direct beneficiaries of this years event.

While I welcome all participants, it would be great to get as many people down to Main Street to participate in the event. Even if it is just for a coffee from Hills Daily Grind and to say Hi to those brave souls who have registered to rough the night under the stars for a good cause.

Despite the testing night ahead, I’m really looking forward to the Sleep Out. I hope to see you down there. For details: www.hillswintersleep
