Tess Swanson joined the young dynamic club 55 years ago. When she first drove to the club premises in Baulkham Hills there were a lot of paddocks and very few buildings on the way.

“I remember arriving once and there was a fair on the land opposite (where the shops are now) and there were elephants,” she said.

The 95-year-old was one of several long-time members who were special guests at the club’s 60th celebrations at its Jenner St premises on Tuesday.

Bad weather meant there was no bowling but there was a great morning tea followed by trivia and then a celebration lunch attended by over 90 people.

Carole Elvin gave a detailed history of the women’s bowling club which started as a meeting of 18 women on the clubhouse verandah.

The club was affiliated on May 1, 1959. By the time of its first AGM there were 50 members and in 1999, when it celebrated its 40th anniversary there were 166 members.

There are now 70 current members who gathered to celebrate the milestone with former members and other clubs.

The club has won 21 Pennant Flags since 1974/75. Present Club President Pat Robinson said she took up bowling after retirement and is now “hooked”.

“I am really proud of being president of this club. It’s an excellent club. Bowling is part of (the attraction) but it’s the camaraderie and the lifelong friendships you make.”

She dismissed any suggestion it was a sport for retirees though. “It’s not an age-related sport, there are so many young people taking it up now. There are a lot of State players in their 20s or 30s. Give it a go.”
