Aneesa Abdu, 16, from James Ruse Agri­cul­tural High School has won the Young Women in Pub­lic Af­fairs Award (YWPA) run by the Zonta Club of Syd­ney Hills.

Stu­dents from 44 high schools in West­ern Syd­ney were in­vited to nom­i­nate for the award which targets young women be­tween the ages of 16 and 19 who are in­volved in pub­lic af­fairs and and the vol­un­teer sec­tor.

Keru Lau and Kelly Ni, also from James Ruse Agri­cul­tural High School and Jade

Williams from Cer­don Col­lege were also named as fi­nal­ists.

Can­di­dates are re­quired to pro­vide ev­i­dence of vol­un­teer lead­er­ship achieve­ments and a ded­i­ca­tion to em­pow­er­ing women world­wide through ser­vice and ad­vo­cacy.

Aneesa was pre­sented with her win­ner’s cer­tifi­cate and a cheque for $500 at he 26th West­ern Syd­ney IWD break­fast at the Novotel Syd­ney Par­ra­matta, ear­lier tis month.

Her aim is study law with a fo­cus on Fam­ily Law and aims to vol­un­teer to fur­ther refugee rights as well.

As well as vol­un­teer­ing in var­i­ous ca­pac­i­ties at her school, in­clud­ing be­ing a peer sup­port co-or­di­na­tor, she has fundraised to help wid­ows and or­phans in Ye­men and to pro­vide home care pack­ages for Syr­ian refugees.

Her nom­i­na­tion will now go on to the Zonta District Awards (NSW and ACT).
