Kid to kid

Rafferty chats with 13-year-old 'A Fiver for a Farmer' founder Jack Berne.

What inspired you to start 'A Fiver for a Farmer'?

I was watching BTN, which is a news channel for kids. It showed kids my age skipping school to help their parents on the farms. I was thinking: what could I do about it? How I could help them? This was in July 2018, so before all the drought relief concerts and call outs. I was shocked that I couldn’t find much info on the drought. Our Aussie farmers were just getting on with it without support. So that night I brainstormed with mum and the dress-up day idea was made.

How does 'Fiver for a Farmer' help our farmers?

We help by raising money and directly giving back to them. We do a big fundraiser day each year with people dressing up as farmers and donating $5. To date, we have raised over $2 million that has gone directly back to our farmers. I have found that using my small but mighty voice, people have listened.

Why is it so important for us to continue to find ways to support farmers?

Being kind is really easy. It doesn’t cost a thing and it makes a big difference to someone else’s life. I will always support our Aussie farmers. They are some of the kindest people I’ve met. Their problems and struggles haven’t stopped. But when you speak to them and listen to them, they are humble and strong.

What would you say to kids who have ideas on giving back to communities and supporting the environment, but are afraid to take the next step?

Jump both feet in. Tell yourself you can do it. Talk to people about your idea; talk to your friends, family and neighbours. Be brave, be bold. If you believe it, you can do it.

How can kids like me contribute to the cause?

Ask your school to participate in 'A Fiver for a Farmer' day. Ask your parents next time they are doing the groceries if you can look at where the produce is from and buy in season. Check the labels – is it Australian made? Do one simple act of kindness everyday. The world is always better with a little bit of kindness. afiverforafarmer.com.au
