TIMBER CLADDING
Long, lean lengths of solid timber add an air of natural elegance to an exterior, just like on this home in Melbourne (above). “Australian hardwood species are a versatile and durable option for exterior cladding,” says Boral Timber’s Leon Travis. “Blackbutt is especially popular because it is hard, naturally termite-resistant and fire-resistant.” As with floorboards, timber cladding comes in different grades, which refers to the level of burls, veins and natural features. Be aware that although your timber may start off a chic and consistent brown, it may weather eventually to a more rustic-looking silvery grey if not properly cared for and maintained. If left to weather, the colour may initially look patchy, but it will eventually even out.
