ALL GLAMMED UP
A FEW SIMPLE STYLE IDEAS CAN TURN YOUR LESS-THAN-LOVELY LAUNDRY INTO A SANCTUARY
the glam factor
Cabinetry is the first place to start when it comes to decor, fixtures and features. A minimalistic, sleek design in a base colour, as in this design by interior architect Sally Rhys Jones (above), will create a neutral, yet edgy canvas for more ‘out-there’ decor. “Functionality over fabulousness is a good rule – but do add some fabulousness by way of a metallic wall tile, pictorial wallpaper or patterned Roman blind,” says interior stylist and author Tahn Scoon. To really glam up your space, go all out and add a chandelier or an opulent mirror: just make sure the rest of your laundry design supports the classic theme. If modern is more your thing, choose sleek and contemporary light fittings to match your cabinetry. Different textures such as granite or Caesarstone can also add more pizzazz. “If marble is outside your budget, a lot of brands do cheaper, look-alike Laminex options,” says Tilly.
the basics
Start by thinking about what you’ve got, what you need and – most importantly – what you want. Sleek benchtops for folding, a cool feature sink and chic storage are all must-haves for a glamorous space – as is a state-of-the-art washing machine, one that not only looks the part but lets you do more in less time, so your space stays tidy longer. “Doing laundry every day or every second day can become a chore, so a bigger-capacity machine, of 10kg or above, can mean fewer loads throughout the week,” says senior marketing manager Brad Reed of home appliances at LG Electronics. Less chaos and carefully chosen design and decor make all the difference. “Clean lines and a simple colour palette with as little clutter as possible are key to making a laundry stylish,” advises Home Beautiful’s stylist Tilly Roberts.
