In a nod to Caribbean style, the wall to the pantry (below) was lined with vertical joint pine boards – once the first thing to be ripped out of an old home and now an on-trend statement. As House Rules judge and architect Drew Heath explains, timber lining’s latest iteration is cleaner and crisper than in the old days. “Take it wall-to-wall and corner-to-corner,” he says. “Architraves, cornices and other framing devices are of a bygone time and link you back to the past.” Drew’s fellow HR judge and interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen comments, “Kitchens are part of a bigger space these days. You need to separate the machinery from the comfort end.” >
