Mathias, an architect, and his wife, Sonja, a social worker; and their daughters,

Ellen, 10, and Ingrid, eight.

Are you enjoying rural life?

Mathias: “It demands some adjusting, but we grew up in the countryside so it is a kind of return. Maintaining the open landscape and caring for your own property takes a lot of time.” How does the open-plan layout work for your family?

“It works well as we have small bedrooms for privacy. The house is long which means sound from one end does not necessarily disturb those in the other end. And the family can be together doing different things all at once in the same room.”
