According to managing director Yosi Tal of Designer Rugs, when choosing a rug, “the bigger the better, but it also depends on your budget,” he says. Much hand wringing has been done over how to place your furniture on a rug, but Yosi says that with consideration, some arrangements can be made to work. If you go for the largest option, make sure you leave 30cm between the edge of the rug and your walls, he advises. When buying a rug for under the dining table or bar stools, like this one by Amber Interiors (right), consider a hardwearing, stain-resistant material and make sure it extends at least 60cm beyond the table – on all sides – so that the chairs are completely on the rug. For the bedroom, be mindful that a decent portion of the rug will be covered by the bed, so make sure about half the width of the rug shows at the foot of the bed.
