you could purchase it pre-painted in Alpine Gloss, but many an Australian decided instead to throw some newspaper on the garage floor and get busy with the paintbrush. Depending on your skill level, and whether you’d remembered to sand down the surface beforehand, the results varied.

Unfortunat­ely, no matter how hard you tried, there would be a hair trapped there for all time. One never really knew if it was a stray bristle or one of Dad’s rapidly diminishin­g noggin stock. The temptation to rip it away was a trap for new players, as what was left in its wake was a streak of the original colour. If you were somewhat detail-obsessed, it was all you could focus on henceforth. Neverthele­ss, white cane aged like good cheese, and over time picked up characterf­ul scuffs and scrapes that could have been termed ‘shabby chic’ way before the term was invented.
