RENOVATION TIMELINE
FEBRUARY 2016: The couple begin work on rejigging the floor plan to swap an existing bedroom with the old bathroom. Walls are removed then rebuilt, leaving them with a small second bedroom but a much larger bathroom. MARCH 2016: Demolition begins in the old kitchen, with the removal of dated timber cabinetry and flooring. Plumbing is added in the new bathroom and the couple tackle the rejuvenation of the old fireplace in the living room. APRIL 2016; Darcy arrives four weeks early, meaning Gemma-Ashley can no longer be as hands-on in the renovation. The couple’s builder and good friend, Glenn Wylie of RealTree Carpentry, takes over managing the project as floorboards are laid. The new mum squeezes the selection of skirting and architraves into her busy routine. MAY 2016: The kitchen space is a blank canvas ready for construction. New cabinetry, a Caesarstone benchtop and wall tiles are installed. The showstopper for Gemma-Ashley, a keen baker, is a Smeg ‘Victorian’ cooker and rangehood. JUNE – AUGUST 2016: Bathroom tiling is installed. Large wooden beams are added strategically as a feature throughout. “They are purely to add character and not functional in any way,” says GemmaAshley. Painting begins inside and out, and Gemma-Ashley takes on styling duties, sourcing furniture and lighting. SEPTEMBER 2016: The cottage is complete, ready for the couple and guests to enjoy the property. Gemma-Ashley and Ben are married there. “It was the perfect opportunity for our family and friends from far and wide to meet our beautiful cottage,” says Gemma-Ashley.
