THIS WAREHOUSE-STYLE REVAMP HAS BROUGHT THE BIG APPLE TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA

“THE KEY TO GETTING TEXTURE RIGHT IS UNDERSTANDING relationships. IT’S ABOUT IF EVERYTHING’S HARD IT DOESN’T WORK, IF EVERYTHING’S SOFT IT DOESN’T WORK. tonal GENERALLY SPEAKING, THIS WAS A VERY SCHEME” ~ LAURENCE LLEWELYN-BOWEN, JUDGE

FEATURE WALLS,

creating a warehouse look with a New York flavour, and the use of timber and brick were among the House Rules guiding the makeover of Jess and Jared’s West Beach home in South Australia, so taking the building back to its basic structure and letting original materials play a starring role became the heart of the project. Cue tactile brick feature walls, soft leather and recycled timber cladding in the living zone and kitchen, all adding richness and rustic appeal to the finished result. “The difficult thing about doing something like ‘New York warehouse’, when you’re not in a New York warehouse, is to understand what architectural features you can replicate and make them feel authentic,” explains HR judge and Home Beautiful’s Wendy Moore, who felt the teams did a great job. Another room that won design kudos was the bathroom, with its chic palette of greys. “I loved it,” says homeowner Jess. “Compared to what was there before, it was like stepping into a new world. My favourites were the skylights and the large tiles, which made the room feel much bigger.”

LIVING ROOM

A striking artwork – ‘Breathless’ from Patricia Mendes and Urban Road – above an industrial-style console from Early Settler forms an eye-catching focal point in the living room (opposite). Novocore Premium hybrid flooring in Twilight Oak from Harvey Norman, paired with a leather rug in Sage from Oscar And Willow (above), forms the base of the scheme, with greenery softening the industrial-style surfaces (left).

?? ?? LIVING ROOM In this room, interior cladding was stripped right back to reveal the original brickwork for a cool, industrial feel. The Norse three-seater tan leather sofa from Matt Blatt was chosen for its softness, with an Aether fireplace from Aurora Suspended Fires adding a sculptural mix of form and function.
